Rectus Abdominis Endometriosis [RAE]: A Rare Case Report case report

Abstract

Rectus abdominis endometriosis (RAE) is a very rare form of extra-pelvic endometriosis, often in females with prior obstetric or gynecological procedures. When this condition presents acutely, it can be difficult to diagnose. We report a case of a woman who presents in her late 30’s with two years history of a painful, tender mass in the right lower abdomen. The tissue responds to menstrual cycles during which the pain increase and become intolerable, not relieved by analgesics and a palpable cyclical lump felt above the scar below the umbilicus and towards right side of patient. She underwent two cesarean sections 10 and 5 years before presentation. Abdominal ultrasound revealed two irregular branching hypoechoic avascular lesions. Surgical removal of the mass with adequate clearance of margins performed. In this case, careful analysis of the patient's history, ultrasound imaging and histopathological results together confirmed the diagnosis.
